Mark of Respect for Middlesbrough's Founding Fathers

St Cuthberts, Marton

The last resting place of two of Middlesbrough's founding fathers are to be improved in a scheme costing almost £50,000.

The work is to be carried out on the graves in St Cuthberts's Churchyard in Marton of Henry Bolckow and John Vaughan.

Henry Bolckow who died in 1878, and John Vaughan who died in 1868, were at the heart of the development of Middlesbrough in the 19th century.

Their ironworks, which used local sourced iron ore from Eston and East Cleveland, helped attract workers to the area from all over England, Wales, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Poland and the rest of Europe and helped the town's growth.

Mr Bolckow, born in Germany, became the town's first mayor and Member of Parliament.
