27th March - Ashok and Ray Mallon Open New Play Area in Marton

Ashok pushes Ben Longstaff at re-opening of Bonnygrove Play Area in MartonThe Bonnygrove Park play area in Marton has undergone a dramatic transformation thanks to a £180,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund, the Playbuilder scheme and the Healthy Towns initiative.

Ashok and Ray Mallon joined in with pupils to test out the equipment, which includes climbing frames, a springer seesaw and two cradle swings.

Sophie Maycroft, eight, from Chandlers Ridge Primary School, said: "It's absolutely great. I like all the spinning things. I was spinning so fast, I felt like I was totally out of control."

Fellow pupil Ben Longstaff, nine, particularly enjoyed the tyre swing, and even persuaded Ashok to give him a push.

The Bonnygrove project, which has been ongoing since 2006, involved the removal of existing rundown equipment and the installation of a state-of-the-art new soft play surface.

The work is part of a £500,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund, which has already helped to improve a number of play areas in the town such as Fairy Dell Park in Coulby Newham and The Avenue's play area in Nunthorpe.

Ashok said: "There's a very lively and happy atmosphere here already, and I hope it stays like this.

"This is all thanks to Government money, which is being spent where it matters - in the community. This isn't just figures on the television. It's in the heart of the community."
