ASHOK CALLS FOR ‘TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES TO BE URGENTLY INVESTIGATED’ AFTER DEATH OF MARGROVE PARK YOUNGSTER

Ashok Kumar, Labour M.P. for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, has called for Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to ‘urgently investigate’ speed reduction measures on the road between the main A171 and Boosbeck Village after the fatal death of a young boy on that stretch of road late last week.

12 year old Joe Caven-Norris was hit by a car after he got off a bus yards from his home at Margrove Park on Thursday afternoon.  He died in James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough the following day.

Ashok said “local villagers have been in touch with my office after this terrible incident asking if there can be some form of speed reducing measure put in place on that road.  I agree with what they say. This road is really only a country lane, but I have noticed drivers racing through at high speed, despite speed limits being in place   It may be that some device like a prominent speed camera may help to bring down this speeding, and if it does it will make a safer place for everyone.”

“I have passed on the contact details of engineers at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to villagers, and I will be writing to Councillor Mary Lanigan, the Council’s Cabinet Member of Highways asking if a speed reduction study can be carried out urgently along the length of this road”
